A common call to unity and equality suggests that we are more alike than we are different and it is our similarities that bring us together. While to a certain degree this may ring true, this belief does not account for the richness of cultural differences, the uniqueness of social identities, and perhaps most importantly, the privileges we hold or the oppressions we face.
At the heart of equity, inclusion, and justice work is a commitment to revealing and disrupting oppressive systems, structures, and cultures. It has to be more than just acknowledgment that such oppressions exist; it is re-envisioning and re-building to create spaces that are affirming and just for all. |
